LA CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA DEL BANDO

THE CHURCH OF SAINT MARIA OF BANDO A SPLENDID MEDIEVAL ARCHITECTURE OVERLOOKING THE SEA

The church of Saint Maria of Bando is located on a rocky spur that offers a very striking view of the village of Atrani. The church was probably built in the tenth century, but the first documents about the structure date back to the twelfth century. It was collocated on the top of the mount Aureo, where public announcements of laws and decisions of authorities were proclaimed. The name Bando comes from a fresco that is on the altar depicting Madonna and a child ; the fresco also depicts a bandit about to be hanged unjustly: the Virgin Maria for divine intercession made the grace to release him. The interior has a single nave. In front of the church there is a small sacristy and near the altar there is a small door that leads to the bell tower, there is also a cinerary urn in white marble about Giulio-Claudia era. Unfortunately, in the winter 2014 a wooden effigy of Saint Antonio, the Statue of Madonna of Bando, five pastors, a holy-water font and a marble from the sacristy were stolen. Religious functions occasionally occur and if you want to visit the church you must contact the Parish Priest of Atrani.
