ESCHER AND ATRANI: THE CHRONICLE OF THE WONDERFUL LINK BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND THE COUNTRY OF THE COAST

The white and square houses and the Mediterranean architecture were a sublime inspiration for the Dutch artist Escher (Leeuwarden, June 17, 1898 – Laren, March 27, 1972), who came on the Amalfi Coast in 1923; he was completely enchanted by the coast, so much to stay there until to 1935. Especially it was Atrani to seduce him: Escher nicknamed Atrani the “village”, dedicating several works to its narrow streets and labyrinthine alleys, including: lithography “Atrani Amalfi Coast” 1931, woodcut three-color the Metamorphosis in 1937 and “Metamorphosis II” in 1940. He referred to Atrani when he said: Escher was fascinated also by the decorations of the pulpit in the Church of San Giovanni del Toro (Ravello): “I’m working hardhe wroteAnd this is the main reason of my happiness. Since the beautiful countryside, the mild spring and the excellent hotel are not enough for me to stay two centimeters on a rock, I try to do what I have wanted for a long time”. These are the words written to his friend Jan Van der Does, in a letter sent from Ravello in April of 1923. While staying at the Hotel Toro, Escher knew the woman, who would become his future wife, the Swiss Umker Jetta, whom he married in Viareggio in 1924. In the history of art Escher is mainly known for his woodcuts and lithographs that simulate impossible constructions, tending to infinity: he considered the shapes of plane and space geometry as interconnected and everchanging blocks. Escher’s works are generally beloved by logicians, physicists, scientists and mathematicians who appreciate the use of the geometry, the rational use of polyhedra and his reinterpretation of scientific concepts that were able to stage an often paradoxical reality
